Adelaine, who recently celebrated her 12th birthday, was a very undemanding houseguest this weekend. ABM dropped her off on his way to Durham with Alice for a film festival. The well-brought-up lad stopped off to visit his grandmother in Chapel Hill, who was decorating her power scooter for the retirement home's Mardi Gras festivities Tuesday. She plans to join the parade representing the Art Committee in a Lady Godiva nightshirt. The theme of her float is to honor retired prostitutes. Alice said that visiting ABM's grandmother was more fun than the film festival. Obviously she was brought up well, too.

Ciara Healy of Augusta, Georgia, asks the Ethicist in this morning's Times:
After I was scheduled for a job interview at a university, a member of the search committee Googled me and found my blog, where I refer to him (but not by name) as a belligerent jerk. He canceled the interview. It was impolitic to write what I did, but my believing him to be a jerk does not mean I would not be great at that job, and the rest of the committee might agree. Was it ethical of him to cancel the interview?
How can anybody so stupid be involved in education?

The robe slipped off, and he moved to catch it but missed. "Leave it," she whispered.…

You are my sunshine,
My only sunshine,
You make me happy
When skies are gray.
